About the ePGD IxD Programme

Dropdown Arrow
What is the ePGD IxD programme?

ePGD IxD stands for the e-Postgraduate Diploma programme in Interaction Design from IIT Bombay. This is a certified programme recognized by World Education Services (WES). It holds the same level of academic standing and recognition as any other degree certificate issued by IIT Bombay (see a sample ePGD certificate here).

Dropdown Arrow
What is the nature of the ePGD IxD programme?

The ePGD IxD programme consists of several courses. Each course has a certain number of credits associated with it, which vary from 6 to 12. (See the list of courses and their credits here.) The number of credits for each course are based on the number of lecture hours, tutorial, lab, project hours, and self-study hours. When you pass a course, you earn those credits and a grade. When you earn 36 or more credits, you can claim an ePGD IxD from the IIT Bombay (see a sample ePGD certificate here).

Dropdown Arrow
In what modes are the courses in the ePGD IxD programme offered?

Currently, courses in the ePGD IxD programme are offered in two modes, either in-person-continuous mode or online-weekly mode. The in-person-continuous courses are offered in the IIT Bombay campus. The online-weekly courses usually (though not always) run on weekends and online. However, the final evaluation / presentation of online courses happens in-person in the IIT Bombay campus. All courses offered currently run in a synchronous mode.

Dropdown Arrow
If schedules of courses overlap, how many of them can I register for?

If schedules of two or more in-person-continuous mode courses overlap, you are permitted to register for only one of them. (This is because in this mode these are very time intensive.) If the schedules of online-weekly courses overlap, you may be permitted to register for up to two such courses, provided these run in different slots each week. In this way, you are permitted to enroll in a maximum of two courses when their schedules overlap. You are permitted to register for any number of courses if their schedules don’t overlap. If you have questions about the course schedule, please send an email to [email protected].

Dropdown Arrow
What is the duration of the ePGD IxD programme?

The programme is designed to be self-paced, providing learners the flexibility to complete it at their own pace. You are allowed to complete your 36 credits and earn an ePGD in a minimum of one year and a maximum of three years.

Dropdown Arrow
What will be the cost for the ePGD IxD programme?

You only need to pay IIT Bombay fees when you register for a course (i.e. you don't pay fees for the whole ePGD IxD programme in advance). The course fees depend on the number of credits of the course. Currently, course fees are  ₹ 1,22,272 for a 6-credit course, ₹ 1,63,029 for an 8-credit course, and ₹ 2,44,543 for a 12-credit course (including GST). If you register for 36 credits, the total course fees will be approximately ₹ 7.34 lakhs. Please note that course fees include course material, lunch and tea, but do not include other costs such as travel and accommodation. Please also note that IIT Bombay may revise course fees in future. Please check individual course pages for the current fees.

Once you have done that, please email it to [email protected]. You need to complete this process before the course begins.
  • Document Verification: At the time of registration, you will need to submit a scanned copy of the documents listed above. However, please note that before the award of the ePGD IxD certificate, you must present your original documents for verification by the office of IDC School of Design in the IIT Bombay campus. Academic Policies, Credits and Certification

Dropdown Arrow
What is the attendance policy for participating in the course?

All IDC School of Design courses require 80% attendance. Further, it is compulsory to be present at the final presentation / exam / assessment of the course. The course instructor may specify more attendance policies at the start of each course.

Dropdown Arrow
What is the evaluation process for assessing learners' performance in an ePGD IxD course? How do I pass a course in the ePGD IxD programme?

Depending on its contents, a course in the ePGD IxD programme could have several forms of assessments, including home assignments, a course project, quizzes, vivas and an exam at the end of the course. To pass a course in the ePGD IxD programme, you must receive at least 50% marks overall, and at least 40% marks in the final assessment. The course instructor will announce the detailed assessment plan and passing criteria at the start of each course. Please note that even courses that run in the online mode will require an in-person presentation / exam / assessment at the end of the course, which is held in the IIT Bombay campus. To pass the course, you need to be present in-person for these as per schedule.

Dropdown Arrow
What happens when I pass a course? How will the credits earned in the courses be managed?

After registering for your first course, you need to create your Academic Bank of Credits (ABC) account and generate your APAAR number / ABC ID before the commencement of the course. Once you have done that, please email it to [email protected]. When you pass a course, after attending all assessments, including the end-of-course assessment (which is always held in-person), the EO Office will issue a Certificate of Completion with credits and a grade. IIT Bombay will also transfer the credits you earned from that course to ABC in accordance with ABC's policies.

Dropdown Arrow
Will I receive a provisional diploma or credit documentation for future use upon completion of the ePGD IxD courses?

After you pass each course, the EO Office will issue a Certificate of Completion with credits and a grade. You must complete a minimum of 36 credits within a maximum duration of three years to fulfill the ePGD IxD programme requirements. Once you have done so, you can claim your ePGD IxD certificate. This will be issued during the IIT Bombay Convocation. There will be no provisional diplomas awarded in the interim.

Dropdown Arrow
How and when will I be awarded the ePGD certificate?

After you pass the required 36 credits of courses, you can claim your ePGD IxD. You will be awarded your ePGD certificate during the IIT Bombay convocation ceremony. This usually happens in the month of August. If you are unable to travel to IIT Bombay for your convocation ceremony, you can collect your ePGD certificate at any time after that from the EO office.

Dropdown Arrow
Will there be a re-exam in case of a personal emergency at the time of an assessment?

No re-exams / reassessments are planned for any ePGD IxD courses. If you face a personal emergency (such as severe sickness or hospitalisation) at the time of an exam / assessment, please discuss this with the course instructor as soon as possible. Depending on the nature of the course, the nature of the assessment that you missed, and the nature of your emergency, the instructor will advise you appropriately. Only at the discretion of the course instructor will an exception be made for this rule.

Dropdown Arrow
What happens if I fail in one course?

If you fail a course, and if you have sufficient attendance, as long as you participated in all the assessments and evaluations of the course, the EO office will issue a Certificate of Participation without mentioning any grade or credits for that course. To complete the 36 credits required for the ePGD IxD certificate, you will be required to either retake the same course when it is offered again, or take another course that you have not yet taken. Please note that Certificates of Participation will not be issued to learners who enroll in the course but willingly choose not to attend the end-of-course in-person assessments. To be eligible for a Certificate of Participation, learners must attempt the assessments and receive a failing grade

Dropdown Arrow
What happens if I fail in two or more courses?

Candidates who fail the same course twice, or fail in two or more courses will not be eligible for the ePGD IxD certificate. Even in this case, they will be permitted to register for courses if they wish, and retain the credits of the courses that they pass in ABC.

Dropdown Arrow
If I complete 36 credits but choose not to accept the ePGD IxD certificate, will I be allowed to use the earned credits in another programme?

Learners may opt not to claim the ePGD IxD certificate, and instead retain their earned credits for use in higher degree programmes at IIT Bombay or other relevant institutions, provided such programmes accept these credits. If you choose to retain the credits, IIT Bombay will not issue the ePGD certificate. The EO Office and IDC School of Design will inform you if any higher degree programmes in IIT Bombay recognise these credits. Learners will be responsible for identifying programmes that may accept these credits from other institutions. All credit transfers will be subject to the rules and regulations of ABC. However, these credits will be “consumed” once IIT Bombay issues you the ePGD IxD certificate and you will not be able to use them again. In other words, you can’t use the same credits twice.

Dropdown Arrow
Will I be permitted to pause my enrollment and rejoin the programme at a later stage?

The permitted duration of the ePGD IxD programme ranges from a minimum of 1 year to a maximum of 3 years. This period will be counted from the start date of your first course. If there is a valid reason why you are unable to complete the required credits in the 3-year period, you may request for an extension of up to 6 months. This request will need to be approved by the Dean (Educational Outreach) and Dean (Academic Programmes) of IIT Bombay on the recommendation of the DPGC of IDC School of Design. During this period, learners can defer their courses and join subsequent courses as they become available. The EO Office and IDC School of Design will monitor your progress throughout the programme. After 3 years (or 3.5 years if an extension is approved), learners will no longer be permitted to continue and will be automatically removed from the programme. No refunds will be issued in such cases after removal from the programme. In case you have questions about this, please send an email to [email protected].

Dropdown Arrow
How will I know where I stand in the ePGD IxD programme?

After you pay fees for each course, you will receive a confirmation of registration email. After you pass each course, the EO Office will issue a Certificate of Completion with credits and a grade. Save these emails carefully. The EO Office and IDC School of Design will also track your progress. When you earn 36 or more credits, you can claim an ePGD IxD from IIT Bombay Educational Outreach office by sending an email to [email protected].
